Professor Johnson was elected as a member of the National Academy of Sciences
in 2007, and the National Academy of Engineering in 2000 (Materials Science
and Engineering Section), two of the most prestigious honors accorded
in the fields of science and engineering. Professor Johnson was the TMS
Sigma Mu Lecturer in 2006, received the TMS Robert Mehl Award and the
Institute ofr Metals Lecturer in 2004. He was elected as a Fellow of TMS
in 2003, and Fellow of ASM International in 2002., and in 1998 received
the MRS Gold Medal (Materials Research Society) for outstanding contributions
to the development of new materials for his research on metallic glasses.
He was the winner of the 1996 Hume-Rothery Award (for contributions to
the science of metal alloys) of the The Metals Society - TMS/AIME for
his work on crystal to glass transformations, one of the society’s
highest honors. He received the 1995 ISMANAM (International Symposium
on Amorphous, Nanocrystalline, and Metastable Materials) Gold Medal for
outstanding contributions to the field of metastable materials (for development
of bulk metallic glass materials). In 1988, he received an Alexander von
Humboldt Foundation Distinguished Scientist Fellowship Award and spent
a sabbatical semester at the Physikalisches Institut at the University
of Göttingen, Germany. Professor Johnson was recently awarded an
Honorary Doctorate Degree in Physics (summer 2001) from Bowling Green
State University (in Bowling Green, Ohio, Johnson’s place of birth)
for his career contributions in the field of materials physics. Prof.
Johnson has been a life member of the Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi honorary
societies (for academic achievement as an undergraduate student). He currently
belongs to the American Physical Society (APS since 1974), the Materials
Research Society (MRS since 1982), the Metals Society (TMS since 1982),
ASM International (since 1994), the American Powder Metallurgy Association
(APMS since 1993), and the Bohemish Physical Society.(since 1985) Johnson served from 1985 to 1989 as a Principal Editor for the Journal of Materials Research, from 1992 to 1996 on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Applied Physics and Applied Physics Letters, is a current member of the editorial board for the International Journal of Rapid Solidification Research, and a member of the editorial board of the relatively new Journal of Intermetallic Alloys. He has been a member of the International Advisory Boards for the International Conference on Liquid and Amorphous Metals, and for the International Conference on Rapid Solidification. He has served as a member of the Department of Energy's University Materials Research Council (1995-99) . He has served on numerous advisory committees for the Department of Energy, NASA, Lawrence Livermore Laboratory, and the National Science Foundation. He has done consulting work for numerous companies including General Motors, Hughes Aircraft, MMM Corp., Howmet Corporation, TRW Corp., Amorphous Technologies International, and others. |
